Film Promotion Film Essay Chloe Booth
The fault in our stars made more money in people
watching the film than making it; this is how they made a profit. This means
they can afford to spend money because they know that the profit will be
greater than the expense of producing it. The fault in our stars was realised
internationally. This made money back very quickly since the film was
successful in countries with big populations.
Before the film was released the fault in our stars had
already started to be promoted through press releases. They will release the
cast to get everybody excited. Having famous people in the film made the public
want to watch it more. The public will created rumours about he film and made
up stories the cast answered these questions in the interviews. After that they
released a teaser trailer and a teaser poster to create word of mouth again. A
website for the film was then made where it has a count down to build
excitement. Merchandise was released; this starts to make money back that was
spent making the film. The film company made rumours about the film and about
how they spent too much money, saying they will not make any money from it.
Even bad things like this will get the film heard. When the film was ready for
release they got the most famous people to have more interviews with magazine
and newspaper journalists to make the film even more publicized. They then had
a premiere where the cast attended and took pictures with the fans and sign
autographs etc. When people come out of the cinema and tell their friends
that the film is brilliant the friends are more likely to go and watch the
film. This is the most powerful promotion and they do rely on it, its called
word of mouth.
The film is a romantic comedy drama film made for teenage to
middle age girls. It is based on the John Green book. The film is directed Josh
Boone and Produced by Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen. The film stars Shaline
Woodley and Ansel Elgort and they play Hazel and Gus, two teens, both who have different cancer conditions,
fall in love after meeting at a cancer support group.
The poster
Main Image- the image shows a medium
close up of a boy and girl who appear to be teenagers lying in each other’s
arms outside on the grass. This shows they are in love showing the movie will
be romance. The girl seems to be the protagonist but the boy would also be a
leading male role. The way they have their eyes shut and smiling shows the
romance between the characters this also connotes the importance of love in the
story. The characters looking so happy and in love would really appeal to the
female audience. The girl is wearing a cannula and her hair is cut short which
is going against stereotypes for the typical girl. It also suggests she may
have cancer or a medial condition which tells the audience that the film may be
sad.
Mis en scene- this shows natural
lighting and colours. This shows the vibrancy of the relationship and also the
youth of the characters. Since they are lying outside on the grass it is organic
and to do with nature it shows the youth and vibrancy between the characters
and in their relationship. The photograph doesn’t look set up and look very
real this tells the audience that film is gong to be realistic and relatable to
them. It does resemble a painting; their hair looks so perfect and styled that
it could have been painted. The clothes they are wearing are fairly plain. This
tells the audience that they are very normal teenagers and not extreme
stereotypes. The clothes they are wearing are not branded since this would take
away the attention from them. There are no props this shows the simplicity of
the film.
Colour Pallet- the neutral colours and tones gives a feel good vibe
to the poster as a whole. The colours used in the text are mainly blue and
white. This may have been taken from the book cover as these wear the colours
used. White has connotations of being pure and innocent this reflects off the
characters and gives the audience an insight into their personalities. Overall
the main image has a lot of neutral colours that are very relaxing. The
designer of the poster has placed the brightly coloured text over the darkest
part of the poster, which really makes it stand out, and makes the audience
focus on it. Very warm soft colours has been used in the poster they are very
relaxing and muted. There are no mad pops of colour, which could indicate
danger excitement and action. The colour they have used for the grass has been
darkened and there skin has been brightened to make them to stand out against
the grass. The clothes are natural colours again to make their faces stand out
even more. These colours tell us that the film is romantic and defiantly not a
horror dark mysterious film or a comedy with bright happy colours.
Title- the biggest piece of text on the page is in the middle of
the bottom third of the page and read the title of the film, ‘the fault in our
stars’. This is a very bold statement to make but will leave the audience
knowing the title of the film. The tile follows codes and conventions as nearly
all film posters have the title positioned at the bottom of the page. The title
is a very main feature on the page especially since the blue colour makes it
stand out. Blue connotes happiness,
health and being naïve; all of these things remind us of youthfulness. The size
of the title is quite small compared to other films so the bright colours have
been chosen to catch your eye.
The title has been laid out with
one word on each line. The font looks like it has been draw on with chalk. It
is quite small and they have coloured every other word in blue this make
different words stand out more than others. The words indicate that they are in
love but there is a fault in the relationship that ruins it we know what this
fault is from the oxygen tube that the girl is wearing. The title defiantly
tells us what genre the film is.
Text and credits- the
only interaction of who made and produced the film is the small 20th
century fox logo in the bottom left hand corner. The company must not want to
take the attention away from the film and are not bothered about promoting
themselves, as they are such a big company anyway. This goes for the text as
well. There isn’t a lot of text on the poster not distracting us from the
image. At the very top of the page the text talks about being based on the
bestselling book. This is a very key point in the marketing and production of
the film as the book was so popular most will be watching after reading the
book. The slogan ‘one sick love story’ makes it clear to the audience that it
is a love story and clears up that it has something to do with her being sick.
Using the word ‘sick’ relates to the teenage audience as is can be used as
slang for cool or amazing.
Layout and theory’s- the photograph does focus more on the girl and
she is upright and this tells us that she is more of a main character than him
and the film is going to be from her point of view. The boy is upside down but
he is still an important feature on the poster as it is still very zoomed in on
him. In this poster we can clearly see Prop’s Stock Characters Theory. The
villain in the poster is the illness that she appears to have from the oxygen
tube up her nose and her hair is really short. The Laura Mulvey theory is
actually proved wrong in the poster, the girl has short hair but it is styled
to look lady like and not like a mans short hair style, she doesn’t wear lots
of makeup or show lots of cleavage but both of them do have perfect skin and
pretty faces this is a good sign as it is aimed at woman and not the
stereotypical attractive woman. TODOROV theory- the normal would be two
teenagers a couple lying on the grass. It is then not normal because not
everyone has an oxygen tube out there nose and has cancer. If this girl did not
have this illness then the film and poster would be a completely different
story and give us a different view of the film. This
is a very unusual film poster there is no billing block which most films have
this is very unusual and has broken the film poster rules. This is
defiantly not a teaser poster since it says the release date. They want the
poster to be clean and not clutter the image with the billing block. Just in
case people do get confused and think this is a book cover they have a tiny
picture of the 20-century fox logo and in the bottom left they have the website
name it says thefaultinourstarsMOVIE.com, this tells us that it is a movie
poster and not a book of another type of poster.
Rule of three- The top third shows the top of her head and his chin
but it mainly focuses on ‘based on the New York Times no1 bestseller. The
second third is exactly shows their faces right in the centre and the edges of
their faces this is the most important part at the edges. The bottom third in
the title with the slogan and other small pieces of information like the
website and the hash tag.
The z path-There is a z-path with ‘based on the new york times no 1
best seller’ at the top of the page. Following the z-path you then see the
characters. In the bottom left corner there’s a little symbol that says
‘tfios’. Then there’s the title ‘the fault in our stars’ the slogan and the
release date’. Finally in the bottom right corner it has the fault in out stars
website address. In the bottom third it has the title and the date that the
film is coming out. The audience will recognise this as a romantic film from
the layout and the main characters being more important than the title.
Lighting- The
light source is made to look like the sun coming from directly above them since
they are sunbathing and being romantic there is no darkness or spotlighting
they look warm and loving this is clearly not a horror film. There is some
shadow in the bottom third; this is to draw attention to the title.
The Trailer
The trailer starts with the film rating and there is no
sound. The piano music, which is non-diegetic, starts playing and then a
20-century fox logo appears for couple of seconds and fades to a starry sky. This
reinforces the title with the stars and also tells the audience that it will be
a successful film since a famous film company makes it.
At the end of the trailer ends with girl closing her eyes
once more but this time her arms are crossed. The trailer also opened with this
shot, suggesting to the audience that we follow her story from start to end. In
the first and last shot it she looks upset suggests it has a sad ending. Her
dressed in white against the black makes her appear vulnerable and alone.
Everyone is the trailer wears very neutral colour apart from Hazel, which shows
she is the protagonist. We as the audience will get to know the main character
Hazel very well through out the film and may feel a connection with her making
every emotion she feels relatable.
There is some text used in the trailer ‘best selling’ this
allows the audience to know that the film is based on a book. ‘This summer’,
this excited the audience for the summer to see the film.
The next shot is a fades in. The shot mid/long and appears
to be a dolly shot as the camera moves towards the main characters that are the
same people on the poster. The back of a teenage boy is shown he then twirls
the girl shown in the first shot around then they hug. They are wearing smart
clothes he is wearing a suit and she is wearing a blue posh dress this creates
narrative enigma as the audience want to learn about their relationship and
what’s going on more. You cannot see the boy’s expression but the girl look
really happy and is laughing. The shot is edited together with the other clips
very fast and is a short clip. The camera following them makes the audience
feel more involved in the story like they are really there.
The next few shots fade in and out of each other and all
seem to hold the same message. They all show the girl that seems to be the
protagonist with who seems to be her boyfriend all clips them being very
romantic. This lets the audience know that it’s not just a cancer story but also
a romantic genre. The boy in the clips also appears to be on the boy on the
poster. He never shows his face in any of these fast shots, which creates
enigma for the audience as they question what he looks like, and is it who they
think it is (the guy on the poster). We still hear a voice of the girl though
out all of the shots as she commentates her story the sound in non-diegetic.
The more intense the relationship gets the more intense the music seems to get,
this makes the audience feel more excited and involved with the story.
It fades back to her lying on the grass it is a close shot
then jump cuts even closer to just her eyes. When her eyes close the music
suddenly stops. It shows the audience that that part of the story she was
living that seemed quite happy has ended.
The trailer takes another turn and the over all feel an
emotion that had be created has changed. This has happened because a more
upbeat song begins and so does the commentary. The commentary allows us to
follow along with her story.
A room filled with ill looking
people sitting in a circle I shown. The guitar playing becomes diegetic since
it shows a man singing and playing the guitar. When the music stops it cuts to
her sitting in the room the voice over tells us it is a support group. It’s
revealed her name is Hazel and that she does in fact have cancer. The room is
warmly light properly by spot lighting. She is wearing her usual denim jacket
and her hair is the same as always short and styled femininely.
Different music plays and a
subtitle screen showing ‘based on the best-selling novel by John Green’ and the
voice over starts again.
She is sitting in a café reading a book
looking at a couple in disgust as they kiss, this shows she’s not keen on
relationships maybe because she thinks she’ll never find love. The scene is
very short and moves along fast. You cannot hear the normal noise from a café
it is all non-diegetic
It fades to a conversation that
she is having with her parents. She is wearing a white jumper, and her medical
tube. She is sitting on a bench in her kitchen and she discusses with her
parent how she wants to be a normal teenager. The room is light by the natural
light coming from the window, the film does this a lot and makes the target
audience (teenage girls) want to watch it even more since they like the
normality that she lives and can relate.
She bumps into the boy she was
kissing in the beginning and we finally see his face. We know who it is since
he has the same brown hair and leather jacket and looks at her very lovingly.
He introduces him self with the
support group this tells us the he also has cancer or has had it previously.
They have a long conversation
outside. He asks her what her name is and then they continue speaking. He is
quite funny and she seems very embarrassed and awkward. They give the impression
that they like each other. We already know that they get together from the
previous clips shown at the beginning of the trailer, so this gives the
audience a chance to get to know the charters and know the story line better
and makes it more exciting. The scene is long and has been light by natural
lighting. The camera is still and is a medium shot. When he pulls out a
cigarette she says, “you were doing really well.” The non-diegetic music stops
and he says, “I never light on.” This gives the impact of her confusion and
excitement to find out what he means by this. His quirkiness makes the audience
like the pair even more. The non-diegetic music starts playing again and its
very upbeat and happy.
It fades to her reading a book looking out of a window, which
is a lot lighter, but with a big shadow connoting that the cancer is always
with her looking over her. The fact she’s reading a book could tell the
audience that the book may be quite important in the film since they show her
reading it so much. This is a mid shot
and allows us to feel as if we are in the room with her.
A while later she says she’ a
grenade and the music stops like a grenade has blown up and we are made to feel
physically that the grenade has blown up. The sound goes quite then the music
leads to a dramatic build up which creates suspense for the audience.
The last shot is a close up and ends with the girl again
lying on the grass but this time with the hospital tube, which tells us she is
ill later on in the film. Starting and ending with the same type of shot
suggests that we will follow her story from start to finish and that the film
ends with her being alone once again. She also looks upset but also that she’s
finding happiness in her sadness since she is smiling; this suggests the film
ends with her being sad. The close up shut allows us to see her in full detail,
which makes us feel more trusting and that we are making a relationship with
her. Through the sound and music we follow the girls story. The music seems to
alter and change depending on how we are made to feel.
The difference between trailer the poster is the trailer has
sound and movement where as the poster doesn’t. The Trailer doesn’t show the
photograph on poster but does show many different locations, which the poster
does not do. The trailer shows sound, dialogue and editing because it is all on
the same medium but the poster is on a different medium.
Conclusion
This film was so successful since the book with such a hit
and was so brilliant. The poster and trailer were made very well which was also
an encouragement to watch the film. Word of mouth was very important and with
out this the film may have not been successful. Two stars in the film were up
and coming to be famous and this was an extra bonus to watch the film. Over all
I think the film has been very well made but the advertising was even better.
The story line also played a huge part in the film becoming successful since
the main characters were so normal and not perfect and didn’t have amazing
lives, which the target audience can relate to. Since they can relate to it
they want to tell everybody, which is word of mouth. Word of mouth is the most
important thing since most people go to the cinema together and not alone. They
are more likely to ask people to go to the cinema or buy the film and watch it
together than watch it alone. When asking they will look for the trailers and
posters and make a judgment weather to go or not. If they do go and enjoy the
film they will encourage other people to go and watch it making the film know
more and more. The whole process will happen again. The film budget was $12
million, which is quite a low cost, but they got it all back since from the box
office made $307.2 million back.

Work on introduction.
Why
does Hollywood dominate the film industry?
Hollywood
dominated the film industry because they spend the most money promoting and
creating the film; therefore they make more money from people watching the
film. They have the money to spend to promote and make the films this can lead
to success like star Wars, James Bond, The Hunger Games etc. But they do have
some have failures like John Cater, The Lone Ranger and tomorrow land. They can
afford to spend this money because they know that good films will make even
more money. Word of mouth, when people come out of the cinema and tell their
friends that the film is brilliant the friends are more likely to go and watch
the film. The film companies do not have to pay for this but it is the most
powerful promotion and they do rely on it. The more money you have you can have
an international release. If you can do this and release your films in places
like China you can then you can make your money back very quickly if the film
is successful. If you do have an international release you have to make the
film easy to understand and simple or people will think that the film is bad
and not go and watch it.
The process of promoting and releasing a film
Before the film was released we start promoting the film
through press releases. They will release the cast to get everybody excited. The
film is not really a star vehicle but people are going to watch it since the
book written by John Green was such a big success that having two famous people
as the main characters (Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort) who are rising to fame
is just a extra bonus for the secondary audience who haven’t read the book.
Rumours and interviews- the public will create rumours about
the film and make up stories and then they will then get the cast to answer
these questions in interviews. After this they will release a teaser trailer
and a teaser poster to create word of mouth and trying to get people to talk
about the film. Then the film company may create a website for the film where
it has a count down to build up the excitement and the teaser trailer and
poster. They may also create toys for the film like in McDonald’s. The film
company will have to go to a toy company 9 months before so the toy can be released
the same time as the film. A child will then buy a pencil case and a friend
will see it and want to watch the film. The film company might make rumours
about there film about how they spent to much money and they will not earn the
money back even bad things like this will get the film heard. When the film is
made they will get the most famous people to have more interviews with magazine
and newspaper journalists to make the film even more publicized. They will then
have a premiere where the cast will go to London on the red carpet and take
pictures with the fans and sign autographs etc.
The fault in our stars
There is some
shadow in the bottom third but as I said earlier this is to draw attention to
the title.
The fact that in the close up shot she is very sad looking shows us that the
end of the film may also have a sad ending. Her dressed in white against the
black makes her appear vulnerable and alone. Everyone is the trailer wears very
neutral colours apart from Hazel which shows she is the protagonist. We as the
audience will get to know the main character Hazel very well through out the
film and may feel a connection with her making every emotion she feels
relatable.
It fades back to her lying on the
grass it is a close shot then jump cuts even closer to just her eyes. When her
eyes close the music suddenly stops. It shows the audience that that part of
the story she was living that seemed quite happy has ended.
The trailer takes another turn
and the over all feel an emotion that had be created has changed. This has
happened because a more upbeat song begins and so does the commentary. The
commentary allows us to follow along with her story.
A room filled with ill looking
people sitting in a circle I shown. The guitar playing becomes diegetic since
it shows a man singing and playing the guitar. When the music stops it cuts to
her sitting in the room the voice over tells us it is a support group. It’s
revealed her name is Hazel and that she does in fact have cancer. The room is
warmly light properly by spot lighting. She is wearing her usual denim jacket
and her hair is the same as always short and styled femininely.
Different music plays and a
subtitle screen showing ‘based on the best-selling novel by John Green’ and the
voice over starts again.
She is sitting in a café reading a book
looking at a couple, in disgust, as they kiss, this shows she’s not keen on
relationships maybe because she thinks she’ll never find love.

Film Promotion Film Essay Chloe Booth
Why does Hollywood dominate the film industry?
Hollywood dominated the film industry because they spend
the most money promoting and creating the film; therefore they make more money
from people watching the film. They have the money to spend to promote and make
the films this can lead to success like star Wars, James Bond, The Hunger Games
etc. But they do have some have failures like John Cater, The Lone Ranger and
tomorrow land. They can afford to spend this money because they know that good
films will make even more money. Word of mouth, when people come out of the
cinema and tell their friends that the film is brilliant the friends are more
likely to go and watch the film. The film companies do not have to pay for this
but it is the most powerful promotion and they do rely on it. The more money
you have you can have an international release. If you can do this and release your
films in places like China you can then you can make your money back very
quickly if the film is successful. If you do have an international release you
have to make the film easy to understand and simple or people will think that
the film is bad and not go and watch it.
The process of promoting and releasing a film
Before the film is releases we star promoting the film
through press releases. They will release the cast to get everybody excited.
Having famous people in the film to make the public want to watch it more.
Rumours and interviews. The public will create rumours about he film and make
up stories and then they will then get the cast to answer these questions in
the interview. After this they will release a teaser trailer and a teaser
poster to create word of mouth and trying to get people to talk about the film.
Then the film company may create a website for the film where it has a count
down to build up the excitement and the teaser trailer and poster. They may
also create toys for the film like in McDonald’s. The film company will have to
go to a toy company 9 months before so the toy can be released the same time as
the film. A child will then buy a pencil case and a friend will see it and want
to watch the film. The film company might make rumours about there film about
how they spent to much money and they will not earn the money back even bad
things like this will get the film heard. When the film is made they will get
the most famous people to have more interviews with magazine and newspaper
journalists to make the film even more publicized. They will then have a
premiere where the cast will go to London on the red carpet and take pictures
with the fans and sign autographs etc.
The fault in our stars
The film is a romantic comedy drama film made for teenage to
middle age girls. It is based on the John Green book. The film is directed Josh
Boone and Produced by Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen. The film stars Shaline
Woodley and Ansel Elgort and they play Hazel and Gus, two teens, both who have different cancer conditions,
fall in love after meeting at a cancer support group.
The poster
Main Image- The image shows a medium
close up of a boy and girl who appear to be teenagers lying in each other’s
arms. This shows they are in love showing the movie will be romance. The girl
seems to be the protagonist but the boy would also be a leading male role. The
way they have their eyes shut and smiling shows the romance between the
characters this also connotes the importance of love in the story.
Mis en scene- This shows natural
lighting and colours. This shows the vibrancy of the relationship and also the
youth of the characters. Since they are lying outside on the grass it is organic
and to do with nature it shows the youth and vibrancy between the characters
and in their relationship. The neutral colours and tones gives a feel good vibe
to the poster as a whole. The photograph doesn’t look set up and look very real
this tells the audience that film is gong to be realistic and relatable to
them.
Title- the title is a very main feature
on the page especially since the blue colour makes it stand out. Blue connotes happiness, health and being
naïve; all of these things remind us of youthfulness.
The poster is two people and boy and girl lying on the grass
cuddling. There is a small amount of grass but just another for the audience to
realise that they are lying on the grass. The girl has an oxygen/medical tube
coming out of her nose, which is saying that she is ill and vulnerable him
looking at her is telling us that he care’s about her.
The photograph does focus more on the girl and
she is upright and this tells us that she is more of a main character than him
and the film is going to be from her point of view. The boy is upside down but
he is still an important feature on the poster as it is still very zoomed in on
him. The photograph does have some elements of a painting; their hair looks so
perfect and styled that it could have been painted. The poster looks like they
are not posing and doing what average couple would do sunbathing and being
romantic.
The clothing that they are wearing denim jacket
nude blouse, grey jumper and brown jacket suggests they are older teenagers 16-19.
The clothes they are wearing are not branded since this would take away the
attention from them. The boy has his eyes slightly open looking at the girl
also has her eyes closed. They both look very sleepy this could indicate that
they are ill or the sun is really bright so they can’t see. The girl has her
hand wrapped around his head these things indicates that they are a couple.
The light source is the sun coming from directly
above them since they are sunbathing and being romantic there is no darkness or
spotlighting they look warm and loving this is clearly not a horror film. There
are no props since they are not really needed. The camera is so zoomed in on
their faces that there is no need or room for props.
The poster is not a star vehicle but people
are going to watch it since the book written by John Green was such a big
success that having two famous people as the main characters (Shailene Woodley
and Ansel Elgort) is just a extra bonus for the people who haven’t read the
book. In this poster we can clearly see Prop’s
Stock Characters Theory. The villain in the poster is the cancer she has an
oxygen tube up her nose and her hair is really short which suggests that she
has cancer and is ill.
The Laura Mulvey theory is actually proved
wrong in the poster, the girl has short hair but it is styled to look lady like
and not like a mans short hair style, she doesn’t wear lots of makeup or show
lots of cleavage but both of them do have perfect skin and pretty faces this is
a good sign as it is aimed at woman and not the stereotypical attractive woman.
TODOROV theory- the normal would
be two teenagers a couple lying on the grass. It is then not normal because not
everyone has an oxygen tube out there nose and has cancer. If this girl did not
have this illness then the film and poster would be a completely different story
and give us a different view of the film.
Very warm soft colours has been
used in the poster they are very relaxing and muted. There are no mad pops of
colour, which could indicate danger excitement and action. The colour they have
used for the grass has been darkened and there skin has been brightened to make
them to stand out against the grass. The clothes are natural colours again to
make their faces stand out even more. These colours tell us that the film is
romantic and defiantly not a horror dark mysterious film or a comedy with
bright happy colours. The only colours that are quite bright and stand out is
the colour of the title it is a bright blue and white and is the most dramatic
colour of the page they have done this since it is quite a small size text
compared to other films so it needs to stand out against the other neutral
colours.
The slogan is ‘one sick love story’. They have
used this in quite an ironic way because sick in the urban dictionary is means
cool, crazy and insane but they have said that it is a sick love because
everything was so happy and now it is ruined making it the bad kind of sick or
they are more likely saying that they are literally sick meaning the ill kind
of sick. This gives the audience a bigger insight to the story line.
This is a very unusual film
poster there is no billing block which most films have this is very unusual and
has broken the film poster rules. This is defiantly not a teaser poster
since it says the release date. They want the poster to be clean and not
clutter the image with the billing block. Just in case people do get confused
and think this is a book cover they have a tiny picture of the 20-century fox
logo and in the bottom left they have the website name it says
thefaultinourstarsMOVIE.com, this tells us that it is a movie poster and not a
book of another type of poster.
The Trailer
The trailer starts with the film rating and there is no
sound. The piano music, which is non-diegetic, starts playing and then a
20-century fox logo appears for couple of seconds and fades to a starry sky. A girl in a white top is lying on
some grass she has an oxygen tube she is looking up most likely at the sky. A
voice over starts with a woman’s voice most likely the girl on the grass. It is
a medium/close shot and is very dark. She has a very then is quite a normal
resting face like she is just admiring the stars. This links to the fault in
our stars title, which is very cleaver. There is just another lighting for you
to see her and her face light she is being lit by the stars they have done this
for the full effect of her enjoying the little things because the average
person wouldn’t have time to look at the stars and would take it for granted.
The music of the piano is still non-diegetic and it makes it quite clear that
she is the girl talking in the voice over. It is quite a short clip but not as
short as others. She isn’t wearing lots of makeup or sexy clothes this is good
for her target audience.
Here it has a jump cut with a slight fade to
the back of a teenage boy twirling the girl that was previously shown around
and then they hug. They are wearing smart clothes he is wearing a suit and she
is wearing a blue posh dress. The shot is a medium shot that has been zoomed in
slightly. You cannot see the boy’s expression but the girl look really happy
and is laughing. The shot is edited together with the other clips very fast and
is a short clip.
It fades to the back of the teenage
boy’s head is shown and the girl is laughing they are both sitting at a table most
likely in a restaurant since there are glasses on the table, it look as if it
has been light candle light and they are sitting quite up right and smart. She
is wearing a blue dress/top and the music voice over and music is still playing.
You cannot see what the boy is wearing. The shot is edited together with the
other clips very fast and is a short clip.
It
fades to an out of focus shot of them kissing and then becomes in focus. You
cannot see what she is wearing but he is wearing a brown leather jacket. It
looks as if they are inside a room but it is out of focus so it is hard to
tell. She looks quite happy but you can’t see his face. It is a medium shot and
the room looks quite dark. The shot is edited together with the other clips very
fast and is a short clip.
It fades to a close shot with
them kissing it is out of focus and you can’t see the clothing props or expressions.
It is very dark and lasts for about half a second
It fades back to her lying on the grass it is
a close shot. The music has changed and sounds more dramatic and slows down but
the voice over continues. It zooms in on her eyes even more and the shut and
the music and voice over ends.
It jump cuts to black and the
voice over continues for a couple of seconds.
It then cut’s to a bag on wheels in being pulled across the concrete. It
then cuts to her pulling the bag in a car park with a man behind her who is
bald. A guitar starts playing and her voice over again it is non-diegetic and
zooms in on her face with the medical tube she is in a different location.
It zooms out and she is sitting on a hospital
bed with a hospital gown on. There is medical machines and you can clearly she
is in a hospital the room is very brightly light as it would be in a hospital.
The edits have been slowed down since the music has changed to a slower pace.
The music is non-diegetic, as she cannot hear it. She looks very bored and ill.
We also know she is in a hospital since the voice over says; “the truth is
doctors appointments”.
The next scene in her sitting on
a sofa looking ill with a blanket on her it is in her house a lady probably her
mum touches her leg. The woman also brings in a tray or food. The camera angle
is low and is slightly looking up at her as if we were sitting on the floor. It
is not light brightly but you can see the window behind that is letting most of
the light in. The scene is very short the voice over in non-diegetic and she
says “reality shows”.
A room filled with ill looking
people sitting in a circle. The guitar playing becomes diegetic since it shows
a man singing and playing the guitar. It cuts to various people looking board
looking at the man. When the music stops it cuts to her sitting in the room the
voice over tells us it is a support group. The man that was previously playing
the guitar asks her how she is. The man says he will play another song. The
room is warmly light properly by spot lighting. She is wearing her usual denim
jacket and her hair is the same as always short and styled femininely.
Different music plays and a
subtitle screen show’s ‘based on the best-selling novel by John Green’ and the
voice over starts again.
She is sitting in a café reading a book
looking at a couple, in disgust, as they kiss. The scene is very short and
moves along fast. You cannot hear the normal noise from a café it is all
non-diegetic
It fades to a conversation that
she is having with her parents. She is wearing a white jumper, and her medical
tube. She is sitting on a bench in her kitchen and she discusses with her
parent how she wants to be a normal teenager. Her parents are preparing a meal.
The room is light by the natural light coming from the window, the film does
this a lot and makes the target audience (teenage girls) want to watch it even
more since they like the normality that she lives.
When she walks across the car
park again that leads to the support group her mum leans out of her car window
and tells her to make some friends this is diegetic. Because they are wearing
coats and jackets all the time it is probably spring. It is light naturally
since it is outside.
She bumps into the boy she was kissing in the
beginning and we finally see his face. We know who it is since he has the same
brown hair and leather jacket and looks at her very lovingly. Behind them there
is a staircase and they are in a corridor. At the end of the trailer there is a
window or door because lots of natural lighting is coming in. She says sorry
and he reply’s “my bad.” The non-diegetic music is still playing which is a
quite guitar strumming, which is quite romantic.
He introduces him self with the
support group whom are all sitting in a circle around the room and he tells
everyone his fears are oblivion. Right
beside him is a flip chart that reads ‘St. Paul’s Cancer Support’ we now know
they defiantly all have cancer.
They have a long conversation
outside. There are lots of trees and there is a church behind them were the
support group was held. He asks her what her name is and then they continue
speaking. He is quite funny and she seems very embarrassed and awkward. They
give the impression that they like each other. We already know that they get
together from the previous clips shown at the beginning of the trailer, so this
gives the audience a chance to get to know the charters and know the story line
better and makes it more exciting. The scene is long and has been light by
natural lighting.
They walk down a road and there are cars
parked along the street. He is wearing his normal brown leather jacket and he
is wearing a black coat and a blue t-shirt. They look very happy and laughing.
They are on a bus standing up
looking like a couple. These things indicating they are getting to know each
other and falling in love.
They talk about what her life story
was on a sofa.
Fades to her looking out a window
and the voice over continues she looks sad and reading a book again. This could
tell the audience that the book may be quite important in the film since they
show her reading it so much. Then her eating with her mum and dad. Then back to
them talking on the sofa again. They walk in a park and look as if they are
going for a picnic. A new character is introduced and he is sitting in a garden
talking to the girl he has glasses on which could indicate that he is blind. It
then cuts to the boy giving the girl some flowers. He is wearing a basketball
vest, which says to us he is still quite young. They are then talking to each
other on a swing in her garden. Them talking in diegetic the music is non
diegetic. She says she’ a grenade and the music stops. A suspense piano starts
playing and her dad carries her into a hospital. Her mum and dad have their
hands on their face looking shocked. He stands there in the hospital looking
sad. The music becomes less suspense and more romantic. From 20th
century fox is showed. A voice over of the boy start being played. He’s sitting
on a sofa with her the voice over in non-diegetic. They are sitting at the
table and the dialogue becomes diegetic. The music then becomes more dramatic
and loud and if a different scene they lean in and kiss each other. ‘This
summer’ fades onto the screen. There is a short clip of him walking into the
room. They are sitting on a bed undressing each other and then they kiss. It
then has a jump cut to black and ‘the fault in our stars appears. The boy and girl are sitting on a bench
looking sad and she puts her head on his shoulder. She is lying in bed crying
dramatically and her mum and dad are comforting her. She is sitting in the
garden with the different boy and the glasses. He asks her if she is angry. The
girl, boy and the boy with glasses through eggs at a posh car outside a big
house it zooms in on the car and then out back to them. It cuts to black and
the inter title appears ad reads ‘the fault in our love’. It then jump cuts to
him lying in bed, then fades to a camera moving looking at an Amsterdam river a
voice over of her continues. It then cuts to her and him on a boat on the
river. A limousine drives down a road and he is standing out of the sunroof.
They are on a bench cuddling. It fades to a zoomed out shot of them sitting in
a restaurant where they were sat previously. The final shot is her lying on the
grass like in the beginning of the trailer but this time she has tubes coming
out of her nose and she says “okay”. The music goes much quieter and the title
appears ‘the fault in our stars’. The people that are involved with the making
of the film are then listed very, very quickly. The release date with the website
and the hash tag are show and the music fades out.
The difference
between trailer the poster is the trailer has sound and movement where as the
poster doesn’t. The Trailer doesn’t show the photograph on poster but does show
many different locations, which the poster does not do. The trailer shows
sound, dialogue and editing because it is all on the same medium but the poster
is on a different medium.

The slogan is ‘one sick love story’. They have
used this in quite an ironic way because sick in the urban dictionary is means
cool, crazy and insane but they have said that it is a sick love because
everything was so happy and now it is ruined making it the bad kind of sick or
they are more likely saying that they are literally sick meaning the ill kind of
sick. This gives the audience a bigger insight to the story line.
This is a very unusual film
poster there is no billing block which most films have this is very unusual and
has broken the film poster rules. This is defiantly not a teaser
poster since it says the release date.
The Trailer
The trailer starts with the
film rating and there is no sound. The piano music, which is non-diegetic, starts
playing and then a 20-century fox logo appears for couple of seconds and fades
to a starry sky. A girl in a white top is lying on some grass she has an
oxygen tube she is looking up most likely at the sky. A voice over starts with
a woman’s voice most likely the girl on the grass. It is a medium/close shot
and is very dark. She has a very then is quite a normal resting face like she
is just admiring the stars. This links in to the fault in our stars title,
which is quite cleaver. There is just another lighting for you to see her and
her face light she is being lit by the stars they have done this for the full
effect of her enjoying the little things because the average person wouldn’t
have time to look at the stars and would take it for granted. The music of the
piano is still non-diegetic and it makes it quite clear that she is the girl
talking in the voice over. It is quite a short clip but not as short as others.
She isn’t wearing lots of makeup or sexy clothes this is good for her target
audience.
It fades to the back of the teenage
boy’s head is shown and the girl is laughing they are both sitting at a table most
likely in a restaurant since there are glasses on the table, it look as if it has
been light candle light and they are sitting quite up right and smart. She is
wearing a blue dress/top and the music voice over and music is still playing.
It fades to a close shot with
them kissing it is out of focus and you can’t see the clothing props or
expressions.
A room with ill looking people in
it sitting on chairs around a room. The guitar playing becomes diegetic since
it shows a man singing and playing the guitar. It cuts to various people
looking board looking at the man. When the music stops it cuts to her sitting
in the room the voice over tells us it is a support group. The man that was
previously playing the guitar asks her how she is. The man says he will play
another song. The room is warmly light properly by spot lighting. She is
wearing her usual denim jacket and her hair is the same as always short and
styled femininely.
He introduces him self with
the support group whom are all sitting in a circle around the room and he tells
everyone his fears are oblivion. Right
beside him is a flip chart that reads ‘St.
It then
has a jump cut to black and ‘the fault in our stars appears.
It then jump cuts to
him lying in bed, then fades to a camera moving looking at an Ampstdam river a
voice over of her continues.

NTT - Introduction needs work - focus on the film not Hollywood. Also, you need more on the representation in the poster.
Better Chloe. Well done
